Zone is a term that's sometimes used to describe a person's heart rate or speed relative to their maximum ability.
Heart Rate Zones
For heart rate, Garmin and Polar both use a 1 to 5 scale to describe your level of exertion (1=lowest and 5=highest). Polar defines the ranges as follows:

Forerunner 301 has an AutoLearn feature that automatically adjusts ranges for your heart rate zones by monitoring your workouts over a period of time.
Speed / Pace Zones
Garmin includes a similar concept for speed/pace in Forerunner 301 that uses descriptive words instead of a numbered scale. Here are the speed/pace zone descriptions that are built into Forerunner 301:
